My friend Rory’s dad won some extra Outside Lands passes this year because he ordered an extra naan (long story), and I was lucky enough to get to go along with them for all three days.
Outside Lands is a quintessential San Francisco festival, featuring various artists from musicians to painters to chefs to brewers. This year marks ten years of Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park.
I’ve never been to a festival before, and this was definitely a great first one– I was so charmed by the soaring eucalyptus trees, the fresh mist settling into the grass, the pathways winding between stages (and the rich smells coming from the endless food stands that lined them). I adored watching the graffiti artists work on their murals throughout the day, and I thought the names for different sections of the festival were adorable (prime examples: ChocoLands, FlowerLands, Outside Clams).
Major highlight performances for me included Noname, Thundercat, Jacob Banks, Schoolboy Q, and Solange. I was familiar with all these artists from before except for Jacob Banks– even though I didn’t know a single one of his songs, this was a seriously, seriously incredible performance.
Huge shoutouts to Rory for bringing me along– this was for sure one of the best weekends I’ve had.
Here’s a playlist with select songs from some of the artists I saw…
