There’s a tall cabinet with one wonky door in the far corner of my junior year English teacher’s classroom, a straight shot from the entrance, right behind the almost-life-sized cardboard cutout of Taylor Lautner. Currently, it houses Chex Mix, Famous Amos chocolate chip cookies, and a 56-pack of Rice Krispie treats along with teaching curriculum and several Toni Morrison novels. Continue reading

When I get back from school, I don’t take off my shoes until I’ve walked my dog. We venture up and down through our hilly neighborhood, stopping occasionally while he sniffs at various bushes along the sidewalk. Sometimes we run, and my lungs will be screaming for air after reaching the top of a steep slope, but the rush of moving so quickly is worth it. Continue reading
I woke up to a chill that I’ve missed dearly, one that refreshes my eyes and makes me want to stay huddled in blankets while I’m wide awake at seven in the morning. The previous night, I had partially opened the windows in my bedroom to let in air to mix with the festering heat, and it let me experience the crisp gray skies firsthand after the night passed.
